Last Intel iMac goes vintage, the replacement costs more
Since 15 September 2026, the iMac Retina 4K 21.5-inch (2019) has appeared on Apple's vintage list worldwide. The last significant Intel model in agency fleets is now on borrowed service time.
What vintage means in practice
Apple classes a device as vintage once more than five and fewer than seven years have passed since it was last sold. During that window, hardware service is available only while spare parts remain in stock. After seven years the model moves to the obsolete list and standard service ends.
Day-to-day operations change with that. A broken display or a failed logic board used to be a repair job with a predictable turnaround. From now on, the same fault can retire the machine for good. Three MacBook models became obsolete in early September, among them the Retina MacBook Air from 2018. If any of those are still in your inventory, record them in the same pass.
The software side remains open. We have not verified against an Apple source how long older macOS branches will keep receiving security updates. Reports in the specialist blogs differ on this point.
The replacements and their catches
Mac mini and Mac Studio were announced at the end of August 2026 and have been shipping since 22 September. The Mac mini comes with M6 or M5 Pro, the Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet are standard, 10 Gigabit costs extra.
The ports carry the most important difference. The Mac mini with M6 has three Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gbit/s. Thunderbolt 5 at 120 Gbit/s is reserved for the M5 Pro. Anyone carrying over existing TB5 docks, external NVMe enclosures or RAID systems loses bandwidth with the base model.
Three further points cannot be fixed later on. The M6 Mac mini starts at 16 GB of unified memory and tops out at 32 GB. The SSD is soldered. Only the Mac Studio has a card reader. If your team currently ingests cards directly on the iMac, you will need an additional device.
The price level has shifted
Demand for memory in AI data centres has pushed purchase prices up. Apple applied the increases to Macs and iPads first. In Germany, the base Mac mini M6 costs 1,049 euros, while the Mac mini M4 was 699 euros two years earlier.
For Switzerland, digitec listed 899 francs on 26 August for the Mac mini M6 with 16 GB and 256 GB, and 1,699 francs for the M5 Pro with 24 GB and 512 GB. According to watson, the Mac Studio starts at 2,500 francs with M5 Max and 5,500 francs with M5 Ultra. These figures are several weeks old and should be checked again before you order.
What to do now
Budget assumptions from 2024 and 2025 no longer hold. A staged replacement spread across two or three quarters distributes both the cost and the risk of buying at peak prices.
We suggest working through it in this order:
Filter your fleet inventory for Intel models and note the role, attached peripherals and planned replacement date for each machine.
Replace workstations with admin access to Contao, WordPress or Shopware first. The practical risk sits in an outdated browser on an ageing machine.
Check your dock list before every Mac mini order. If Thunderbolt 5 appears there, the M5 Pro is the right configuration.
Configure RAM and SSD one step above today's requirement, because upgrading later is impossible.
For Intel machines that stay in service, write down a failure scenario: loaner device, current image, route back to the data.
Look at trade-in or resale soon, as residual values drop noticeably once vintage status applies.
